Our chickens are eight weeks old and their legs big enough to band their legs. The bands stayed on the chickens legs, with out falling off.
Two people made banding the chicken's legs easy. Catching chickens that had not been banded yet was our challenge. Daisy as always was their to help move the chickens towards me, so I was able to catch and band all the chickens. Catching the shyest bird was the most difficult, and since she got the purple band, I named her Shy Violet.
Here we very quickly loop a band around our chickens' legs. The bands are small plastic and colorful so I can easily see and identify the chickens when I need to.
I use poultry spiral leg bands. They have some stretch to them and have never needed to be cut off the chicken because it was too tight.
I also moved the chicks into the big coop with the hens. I moved the little chicks food and water and let them find it inside the big coop. Two days later Daisy and I rounded up the chicks and put them into the big coop with the hens.
The first night the chicks stayed in the coop, I took Daisy with me to check on them several times after dark.
How Daisy Dog Helps Band our Chicken Legs
Colorful bands on my hen's legs helps me to give them each a cute name. More importantly I can identify a week bird, or the bully. This information gives me the opportunity to help or let them work out their own issues.
