KNOW WHEN YOUR HENS WILL START LAYING EGGS
The cute ittle chicks you bought in the spring have slowly shed their fluff and feathers grew out.
Then they grew to what seems like the size of a full grown hen.
WHEN WILL THE HENS LAY EGGS?
Here is an adolescent Leghorn chicken. She has most all the traits of a health full grown laying hen. Her feathers are all nicely grown out. She's about the same size as a laying hen. How will I know when this chicken lay eggs?
One way to know when your chickens will start laying eggs is when her comb and wattles grow and are more obvious. Compare the face of the adolescent chicken on the left, to the laying hen on the right. The "comb" & "wattles" become darker or brighter and larger.
The comb is the little crown on the top of the chickens' heads. The wattles is similar to the crown, and is under the chickens' chins. The comb and wattles start out as little bumps on the chickens' heads and shortly before the hens are mature enough to lay eggs, the comb and wattles grow and become more pronounced and easier to see.
